US web service provider Yahoo has announced the launch of a series of metaverse activities in Hong Kong.

Yahoo plans to launch an activity to explore the use of immersive advertising technology. The company’s announcement comes a day after Meta Platforms announced similar plans to use Hong Kong as a testing location for several metaverse initiatives.

Yahoo’s announcement noted that the company will host concerts and virtual exhibitions on the popular Metaverse platform Decentraland. Local idols and artists will be showcased, and NFT (Non Fungible Token) will be released in limited quantities.

Lauren Cheung, Chief Public Officer of Yahoo Hong Kong said, “Yahoo Hong Kong has always provided a wide range of online services related to people’s daily life, including the use of the latest technologies to improve and enhance the user experience. “We hope to use Metaverse to connect people regardless of time and physical location.”

This week, Yahoo is also collaborating with local creators to launch an NFT exhibition titled “The Abys of Kwun Tong”. The exhibition centers around the famous Hong Kong area that has been transformed through a redevelopment project.

Other tech companies, such as South Korea’s Meta and Samsung Electronics, have also chosen Hong Kong as a testing ground for their metavirus-related activities.

Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced on June 14 that the company will work with local businesses such as cafes, schools and art centers to provide a “live” experience in the city. Another part of the plan is to explore the potential uses of the metaverse in everyday life.

As part of the pilot, Meta plans to host a virtual reality (VR) exhibition at a local cafe and an augmented reality (AR) training workshop for teachers and students. In addition, they plan to share NFT concerts on Instagram in collaboration with local artists in Hong Kong.

Meta said on Tuesday that it will work with local partners such as coffee shop chains, schools and arts institutions to provide a “live” metaverse experience in the city and explore potential uses of the metaverse in everyday life. This includes VR exhibits in local cafes and open AR training workshops for teachers and high school students. You can also work with local Hong Kong creators and share your irreplaceable avatar project on Instagram.

Metaverse is a virtual world in which people are expected to communicate, play, trade and work in the future.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics’ asset management division launched the first exchange-traded fund (ETF) focused on blockchain technology in Hong Kong earlier this week. This phase supports the development of the metaverse.

According to the South China Morning Post, Amazon.com also plans to establish a presence in Hong Kong through its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services.

Through strategic cooperation with Hong Kong Science Park, the company plans to train local technology experts and support startups in the fields of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and software as a service.
